Located a considerable distance from a major river or waterway, Lexington's economy was shaped in a way that relied on modern technology, and attempted to draw a commercial base by marketing itself as an agricultural and manufacturing "keystone" for the area. In the early 1900s, Lexington was one of the biggest tobacco producers in the world.
In more modern times, Lexington has kept pace. It is home to some Fortune 500 companies, including Affiliated Computer Services and Lexmark International, as well as having some other companies with major offices, such as United Parcel Service, Trane and Amazon.com, Inc. have a large presence in the city, and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky is within the Lexington CSA in Georgetown. The city has a Jif peanut butter plant that produces more peanut butter than any other factory in the world.
In addition, The University of Kentucky employs over 10,000 people, making it the largest employer in the city.
